At its core, FPSE is about empowering Indigenous students to take ownership of their learning, and to develop a sense of pride and identity in their cultural heritage. This approach recognizes that traditional Western education systems have often been imposed on Indigenous communities, and that these systems have frequently failed to meet the unique needs and aspirations of Indigenous students. The concept of FPSE has its roots in the struggles of Indigenous peoples for self-determination and cultural preservation. For centuries, Indigenous communities have been subject to forced assimilation and cultural suppression, including the forced attendance of Indigenous children at residential schools.

What is FPSE? FPSE is an educational approach that prioritizes the self-education and self-determination of Indigenous peoples. It’s based on the idea that Indigenous communities have the right to control their own education, and that this education should be grounded in their own cultures, languages, and histories.
