The Early Years (1947-1960) The BAFTA Best Picture award was first presented in 1947, and the first winner was “The Man Who Fell to Earth” ’s predecessor, “The Man in the White Suit” (1947), a British comedy film directed by Bernard Knowles. This was followed by other notable films such as “The Blue Lagoon” (1949), a romantic adventure film directed by Henry Cass, and “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957), a war drama film directed by David Lean.
